This photo captures the breathtaking Aurora Borealis, aka, The Northern Lights, illuminating the night sky above the snow-covered trees of Ruka Ski Resort in Finnish Lapland. On a crisp winter night, with temperatures plunging to around -20°C, I spent about two hours braving the freezing cold, moving from spot to spot and experimenting with different angles to capture the perfect shot. The harsh chill in the air added to the adventure, but the sight of the aurora dancing across the sky made it all worthwhile. The vibrant green lights swirled gracefully overhead, casting a surreal glow over the landscape. I framed the towering, snow-laden pine trees as a contrast to the sky’s ever-shifting light show, using a long exposure to capture the movement of the aurora, the glimmering stars, and the stillness of the frozen wilderness. Each shot I took felt like capturing a fleeting moment of pure magic in the heart of Lapland’s winter. This photo was taken with my Sony a7iii, with my Sony 14mm GM lens. The wide angle lens allowed me to frame as much of the landscape as possible, whilst still being able to capture the magic of the natural light show overhead.
